This week was full of interesting casting stories. A well known comedic actor has joined the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, Millennium Film’s competing Hercules project has found its leading man, Godzilla adds a scientist, and Guillermo del Toro’s next directorial effort has brought in two very impressive names.
*This week saw the beginning of production for Ninja Turtles, Paramount’s reboot of the franchise starring everyone’s favorite Heroes in a Half Shell. However, we also heard of a new addition to its growing cast: Will Arnett (Arrested Development). The actor’s role is being kept secret; while he apparently isn’t playing Casey Jones, it has been speculated that he could be either Splinter or the villainous Shredder (two other roles that have yet to be cast). Megan Fox is playing April O’Neil, with the rest of the cast consisting of Alan Ritchson as Raphael, Jeremy Howard as Donatello, Noel Fisher as Michaelangelo and Pete Ploszek as Leonardo. Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath Of The Titans) is directing, with Transformers helmer Michael Bay on board as a producer. Ninja Turtles is set to hit theaters June 6th, 2014. [The Hollywood Reporter]
*2014 will see the release of two Hercules films: Millennium’s Hercules 3D from Die Hard 2 director Renny Harlin, and Paramount/MGM’s adaptation of the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars from star Dwayne Johnson and X-Men: The Last Stand director Brett Ratner. Yesterday, it was announced that Kellan Lutz (Tarzan 3D, Twilight) will be playing the mythological character in the 3D film, which begins shooting next month. The movie “will have at its center a love story between the son of Zeus and the mortal princess of Crete, who was promised to his older brother despite her love for Hercules.” Hercules 3D will be released in theaters next March. *Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla reboot is well into production right now, but we have at least one more addition to its impressive cast. Happy Go Lucky‘s Sally Hawkins is set to play a scientist in the monster film, which also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston among others. Godzilla will stomp his way back to theaters May 16th, 2014 in 3D. [Deadline]
*With Pacific Rim hitting theaters July 12th, director Guillermo del Toro is currently putting the final touches on his next project, Legendary’s Crimson Peak. Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man) and Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) are on board to star, and this week we saw the addition of two very impressive actors. Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) have joined the cast of the gothic horror story, which begins filming early 2014. No plot or character details are currently confirmed. Additionally, Chastain is still considering the role of Jane Porter in Warner Bros.’ Tarzan movie, which is also eying Alexander Skarsgard and Samuel L. Jackson. [Variety]
