Joss Whedon Discusses Villains In THE AVENGERS 2 And Whether Or Not Thanos Will Be Featured

Avengers 2 Banner

Ever since Thanos appeared in the mid credits scene of The Avengers last summer, it has been heavily rumored that the Mad Titan will be the main villain in the sequel (as well as 2014’s Guardians Of The Galaxy, which is confirmed to be connected to Avengers 2 somehow). However, many fans have expressed interest in seeing other villains take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the sequel (such as Ultron or Kang The Conqueror), saving Thanos for a third installment. Speaking with Desede Hollywood at the premiere of Iron Man 3, writer-director Joss Whedon talked about the villain(s) in The Avengers 2, and how the heroes will face off against a villain as powerful as Thanos.  “Well, Thanos is more powerful. He is so powerful he is not someone you can just try out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to threading through the universe and to save the big finale for ‘the big finally’. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on. The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment.” Very interesting. By “some people”, is Whedon referring to the Masters of Evil? There are certainly plenty of Marvel Cinematic Universe villains who can be featured in the team (Abomination, Leader, Crossbones, etc.). Plus, Whedon previously stated that he planned to make The Avengers 2 “smaller” and “more personal”, and “smaller” doesn’t come to mind when Thanos enters the picture. Based on his comments, perhaps we can expect Thanos to be a behind-the-scenes villain, with the Mad Titan taking on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the third movie.

Additionally,  Whedon shared his thoughts on Robert Downey Jr. possibly retiring from the role of Iron Man. “I am not the guy who should worry about him being replaced. He is Iron Man at this point. When I heard that he was cast I just knew that something has changed, and I don’t usually know stuff like that. I said “Now we are in a new phase”. The way he embodies it… I love working with him. Shane captures it so perfectly in this movie. I want him to play it forever. The thing is that he has a flying metal suit. Is not like in those Charles Bronson or Roger Moore movies, when you are like “Dude, you can barely stand”. He’s got some fight in him. At the same time, if Robert decides to hang it up, he has a perfectly good excuse.” The Avengers 2 is set to hit theaters May 1st, 2015.
